Like You’re on the Mountain: Slavka Slavtcheva

“It’s almost like a wave on the sea.”

Slavka Slavtcheva loves Bulgarian folklore. Most of all, she loves it when a room of people and the sounds of a live band give her the chance to dance, holding hands in a circle, around and around in one of Bulgaria’s iconic circle dances. In Minnesota, she is part of the St. Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian School, where young people learn Bulgarian language, crafts, and dance after church on Sundays.

This episode was a special chance to not only talk but participate in the richness that makes Bulgarian tradition so beloved to so many people around the world — we sat and drank coffee, then wine, then maybe some rakija… sang songs, told jokes, and learned where the best feta cheese can be found to make the best Bulgarian pita. We were also invited to attend the Bulgarian Martenitsa celebration in Saint Paul — video of that party coming soon on the “Bonus” page.
